I know I'm like a lot of the guys and just prefer to just leave the shopping to the wife. She always seems to know what looks good on us...But what if the men went to the mall and came home with these:
Back from the Mall in Bible times...
No, there weren't really malls in Bible times. But if Peter or John had gone to a mall to buy a wardrobe, these are the kinds of items you'd see on the racks.
Loincloths: not so fitting as even boxers, they still performed the same function.
Inner tunics: like an undershirt made of cotton or linen. They were thigh-length or ankle-length and were generally for cooler weather.
Tunic coats: This was the basic. It was worn more than any other garment. Most tunics fit about as closely as modern day shirts. They were often long-sleeved, floor-length, and solid colored. Working men or slaves sometimes wore knee-length, without sleeves (think of the messenger in a Roman centurion movie). Very important men wore all white.
Girdles: No, not for the stomach to make you like buff. They were cloth or leather belts worn over the tunic coat. They were usually two to six inches wide and sometimes were studded with iron, silver, or gold. When cloth girdles were tied in the back, they functioned as a belly-pack in front to carry small items like a snack or loose change.
Cloaks, Mantles, or Robes: These were large, loose-fitting garments that were worn over everything else. For the working man, a cloak was made of wool, goat hair, or camel hair. For an upper-crust guy, a cloak would be made of linen, wool, velvet, or silk and could be elaborately bordered and lined with fur.
The Headdresses: There were usually three varieties: the cap (brimless cotton or wool), the turban (thick linen scarf or sash wound around the head, concealing the ends), and the headscarf (square yard of cotton, wool, or silk draped around the head and held in place by several silk twists). No baseball caps and no visors.
Sandals or shoes: Shoes were made of soft leather in a moccasin kind of style. Sandals were made of a rougher, more durable leather.
Accessories: nose rings, rings. (Yes, on guys. Yes, before alternative music.)
So how about it Ladies, do your men look "hot" in their new outfits? Back then it was an everyday outfit. And Men, what if this "fad" came back into style, would you wear it? I would have a hard time saying yes!
So, I thank God today for supplying my needs.
Philippians 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
