When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

You Don't Deserve This

About 3,000 years ago, David was moved to pen a Psalm of praise declaring the glory of God. Maybe it happened as he gazed up at a star-studded summer sky that stretched from horizon to horizon. Whatever the inspiration, David was particularly impressed by the beauty and majesty of God's creation. But as he puts the quill to parchment, his heart is moved even further. He goes from observing the splendor of creation to looking at himself in relation to God, and his amazement increases:

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (Psalm 8:4)

After considering God's greatness, David is awestruck that God would take the time to stoop down and pay attention to him. "What is man that you are mindful of him?" Answer: nothing. Compared to the Lord, we're really nothing. The gap between God's greatness and our smallness is wider than the gap that separates us from an amoeba. And yet, He makes every effort to have a deep, meaningful, love-based relationship with us. He died for it and has done everything shy of overriding our own will in order to cultivate this relationship with us. The more you ponder it, the more you enter into David's wonderment.

What is man? Who am I-that you would care about me? We simply don't deserve the time and attention God gives us. However, God's attention to us begs a question: Do we care as much about Him as he cares about us? He's mindful of us, but how mindful are we of Him?

Almighty Maker of Heaven and Earth, make us as mindful of You as You are of us!
