Matthew 14:25-33
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Peter was the only one in the boat to react in faith. His impulsive request led him to experience a rather unusual demonstration of God's power. Peter started to sink because he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the high waves around him. His faith wavered when he realized what he was doing. We probably will not walk on water, but we may walk through tough situations in life. If we keep our focus on the waves of trying times around us then we too may find ourselves sinking. To keep our faith strong we need to keep our focus on Jesus and His power rather than our own problems.
Even though we start out with good intentions many times our faith will fade. This doesn't mean we have failed. As we see here with Peter that when his faith was starting to fail he called out to Jesus and Jesus lifted him up, the only one that can help. He was afraid but he quickly put his focus back on Jesus. When you are apprehensive about troubles around you and doubt Christ's presence or ability to help, remember that He is always with you and is the ONLY one who can really help.
God Bless!
